In Singapore, most of us live in HDB flats (the main form of public housing, basically apartment flats). We have metal prison-like doors facing each other, corridors, and corridors. From the scent of a family’s cooking to scents that alarm the others about an emergency. Scents that seep through the bottom of the doors in an attempt to communicate in a relatively conservative community.

My Chinese family believes in the Chinese zodiac, and I am born in the year of the rabbit. They’d like to say I have personality traits similar to the animalistic characteristics of a rabbit. The constant association with an animal was always intriguing to me. I’ve never seen rabbits or hares in the wild before, and I did being alone, in America. I see them hiding in bushes for shelter. And when I did, I felt a connection to home in a foreign place. I think the human mind always tries to find a home in foreign places, and in some way, home never leaves.
