The Still Life works are fully digital, and by that I mean every pixel has only ever existed inside the digital realm (no textures, bump maps etc are from photographs or scans). The reason for this was to point out that the human eye can no longer tell the difference between the fabricated or the real, going one step further the scene and all that is in it mimics a our reality, further undermining our ability to tell the difference. I ask the viewer to look strong and hard at the image, the harder one looks the more convinced they are that it is real. Whereas the opposite used to be true of digital imagery, where the more you looked the less you believe it to be real.

These works explore how many of us have unintentionally linked our wellbeing to the virtual world, whereby creation is now an attempt to satisfy our unending thirst for attention and external validation through social media likes, views and followers.
 
Just for a moment pay close attention, gaze at the swirls and splashes and notice the urge to take a photo, the thrill of a ‘like’ appearing on screen or is the lure of another artwork more worthy of your instagram? It’s a battle for attention and we may be losing the war.

When you last purchased a pack of playing cards what game did you buy, Poker, Bridge, Gin Rummy? None, right? Instead you bought the elements to play these games and many more.

NoGame playing cards are similar in that they are not a prescribed game that you can play out of the box. Instead, you are getting the building blocks for countless uninvented games that lie in the future. Think of these as your usual set of playing cards but with a new concept and appearance updated for the 21st century.

Created by Pastel White during the COVID-19 pandemic, NoGame is an open-art project that invites you to participate. Unlike most art that asks you to merely observe, NoGame wants you to be part of it. Like nature, the cards have an in-built order that first needs to be discovered. Once the sequence is unlocked, games can be invented to share with the world.
