Overview

In 2025, Korea Art Forum (KAF) seeks artists to present innovative, engaging, and compelling participatory public art projects through Shared Dialogues, Shared Space (SDSS), in outdoor community hubs such as parks, streets, and plazas throughout New York City. KAF will support up to five artists with $5,500, technical resources, and permits to realize their vision.

Over 41 artists have brought their work to underserved neighborhoods since 2020 through Shared Dialogue, Share Space. Our target audiences face barriers to experiencing art due to their remote locations, economic status, and language challenges. To effectively engage these communities, we provide the events free of charge with live interpretation services in Mandarin, Korean, and Spanish as needed. Catalogs and videos will be translated and subtitled, too, in these languages.

SDSS Projects: We are open to a range of projects that include hands-on artmaking, participatory movement, observation, and theater. Projects generally have these characteristics:

  • Based on the artist’s process, concepts, concerns
  • Prompt intergenerational conversations among participants and artist
  • Easily portable and on view for up to 8 hours
  • Fun and engaging to all ages
  • May teach or model new skills or ways of looking at the world
  • There is a culminating public art installation at the end of programs.

Locations: KAF works with the NYC Parks Department and NYC Department of Transportation Open Streets and Summer Streets programs to secure locations. Tentative timing and locations include:

  • Spring: Bowne Playground Flushing, Queens, and Inwood, northern Manhattan
  • Summer: Central Harlem, Manhattan
  • Fall: Mt. Hope and Mott Haven, Bronx, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn
