Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is offering a new artist residency opportunity focused on temporary, site-specific art interventions that complement and enhance the existing exhibit galleries and interior spaces.
Projects can vary in scale and subject, but must consider the visitor experience and the activities that take place around the site when developing the idea. The goal is to add layers of surprise, delight, silliness and even humor to Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh experiences that inspire joy, creativity, curiosity and kindness.
Art interventions are visual, artistic additions to existing spaces throughout the Children’s Museum that interact with and enhance these spaces.
The selected artist-in-residence will identify various locations in the Children’s Museum for potential interventions that respond to the existing architecture/infrastructure and the FFE (fixtures, furnishings and exhibits.)
Interventions will be temporary and transform the viewer’s perception and experience of the space. The goal is for the artist to:
Be inspired by the spaces and visitors’ behaviors in the spaces
Add something new that will enhance the museum experience
Encourage visitors to engage with the spaces in new ways
The selected artist will create 3-5 “art interventions” throughout the Children’s Museum campus while in residence. The artist will have access to the Museum shop for tools and materials.
The selected artist must also:
Be in Pittsburgh for the duration of the residency
Work onsite at the Museum at least 16 hours a week; four of these hours must be “on the floor” with the ability to engage in conversation with visitors (between the hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm daily)
Meet regularly with the project manager and creative team to present ideas and receive feedback
Communicate efficiently and effectively with the project manager (respond to emails, etc.)
