The Centre for Multispecies Relations and Future Ecologies invites applications from two artists for a 62-day residency at our site in the Altarello di Baida district of Palermo, Sicily.
The residency is structured around a 1,500 sqm garden at the threshold between the city's urban expansion and the historic rural landscape of the surrounding hills. The site, degraded through previous use, characterised by soil compaction and significant biodiversity loss, functions as both studio and subject. Artists are invited to participate in an ongoing process of ecological transformation, producing interventions that emerge directly from extended observation and fieldwork on the land.
The residency unfolds in five phases: an initial orientation period with planned small trips, gatherings and other activities; an observation phase involving independent fieldwork and regular consultations with artists, curators, scientists, and anthropologists from Centre and its network; a proposal and ecological feasibility phase developed in collaboration with mentors; a creation phase; and a public restitution comprising an open event, a workshop, and a public discussion.
Each artist develops an independent site-specific intervention. The two residents share the site, the living space, and the process, exchange is encouraged but not prescribed. Artist duos or artists that always wanted to work together are encouraged to apply: we are very much open to hosting two independent projects but also to giving space to a collaborative one.
