Hybrida AIR is an visual artist residency program in Älvsbacka, in the west of Sweden, ongoing annually since 2021. This year we offer five international visual artists a chance to work alongside each other during one month, after which the outcomes are presented in an exhibition. The exhibition is also part of our festival program.
The selection of participants is made based on practice, viability of execution in relation to the short production period and how the proposals and practices of the applicants interlink and resonate with each other. We might do short video calls with a number of applicants before finalising the selection. Due to the shorter residency period this year, we are focused on shorter projects, or those which are already underway, and practices that can work within such timeframes and circumstances.
We work with a system of self-organisation during the residency, for the communal household, logistics and the exhibition making. This regards collective activities such as meal times, cleaning, shopping, excursions, as well as additional individual/group initiatives. The project is based on the idea of active participation from everyone involved, and value is to be created through the engagement of the whole group, of which the organisers are also part. To make things as smooth as possible, we meet three times online in advance of the residency to get to know each other and align on expectations. There are no specific requirements regarding final outcomes; however, participants are expected to:
○ Develop an individual art project
○ Present an outcome in a final group exhibition, and participate in viewings of the show
○ Allow documentation/representation of their work
○ Be present during the whole time of the residency and participate in pre-residency meetings online.
○ Be responsible for their own work process, resources, as well as the maintenance of common spaces, equipment and contribution to the group dynamics
