Antenna’s Paper Machine Residency supports individuals in print-based artistic inquiry during a month-long residency at Paper Machine in New Orleans. Artists-in-Residence will: 1) develop original editioned work under the broadly-defined rubric of printmaking, including publications, sculptural books, zines, multiples, and other such works; and 2) present complementary programming that engages the public in their project and work.
Antenna’s mission supports creative work in the Gulf South region, including New Orleans. We ask that residents consider how their ideas and work relate to the Gulf Coast region, and how ideas from this region can contribute to proposed works.
Selected artists will be awarded a $1500 honorarium, $500 travel stipend, lodging for a month in the studio apartment at Paper Machine, and assistance in development/execution of an editioned piece from the staff at Paper Machine and the residency coordinator. 25% of the edition produced at the residency will be given to the artist, and the remainder sold though Antenna.
Paper Machine is a 5,000 square-foot center for artist- and writer-driven publishing in the Lower 9th Ward, which houses a range of new and traditional printmaking technologies. We offer commercial-grade digital printers, and a book bindery featuring saddle-stitch and perfect binding machines. Our printers have white toner and digital foil printing technology. We have an in-house screenprinting studio, with optional training from an industry expert. We have community partnerships with The Southern Letterpress to offer letterpress printing for specific projects, and Studio in the Woods, to offer research access to Tulane University’s special collections libraries. Each resident is also given access to Adobe Creative Suite during the month of their residency. Residents are encouraged to draw inspiration and ideas from the Artist Book Collection at Paper Machine, a teaching collection of artists’ books, editioned and one-of-a-kind productions spanning visual art, literary art, graphic design, printmaking, bookbinding, papermaking, and publishing.
The Residency annually welcomes 6 artists, a mix of local and national/international artists to realize unique proposals for print-focused projects and public programs.
