Overview

The Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts and the Local Selection Committee (LSC) of the NM Department of Transportation (NMDOT) seek to commission 1-2 artists/artist teams to create and install a monumental exterior sculpture (site-specific artwork) for two designated outdoor areas at the eastbound and westbound Rattlesnake Draw Rest Areas along Interstate 40 near Moriarty, New Mexico. Seeking artwork that celebrates the history of Route 66 and the spirit and history of movement and transportation in New Mexico in the last 100 years. Audience for this space includes visitors to the state of NM and locals of all ages.

Proposed Artwork should incorporate/consider the following:

  • WILL CONSIDER any interpretations from abstract/non-representational to figurative/representational in style
  • WILL CONSIDER any medium and materials suitable for exterior/outdoor installation on site, free-standing sculpture
  • MUST embody the spirit of Route 66 in New Mexico, the history of movement/transportation and celebrates the 100th Year (Centennial) Anniversary of Route 66
  • CANNOT contain elements considered violent, derogatory, or culturally insensitive
  • CANNOT incorporate elements requiring access to electricity – No Access to Electricity at these installation sites – Unless you have self-sustaining power source such as solar
  • WILL NOT CONSIDER artworks incorporating water features or elements
  • Artwork media/construction can be traditional/mixed/experimental in nature, but MUST BE constructed out of materials that will survive a permanent exterior installation with high sun and wind exposure and high public traffic
  • Artwork MUST fit the allotted installation area.
  • Artwork MUST BE suitable for all weather conditions, non-flammable, and capable of sustaining intense UV sunlight without fading or deteriorating rapidly.
  • Maximum dimensions for proposed sculpture is: 15’H x 8’W x 8’L
  • Artwork CANNOT exceed provided base (concrete pad)
  • Artwork CANNOT contain sharp or pointy projecting objects within 6’ of the base.

The resulting artwork(s) will need to withstand a permanent exterior installation within the identified areas outside of each rest area. The LSC is interested in artwork of all media conducive to exterior installation with high wind and sun exposure. Artwork should incorporate the themes and ideas described above. Artists should also consider the identified installation locations available and how to best utilize the space**.**

The project must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, safe for both children and adults and must meet all applicable code requirements, including ADA compliant. At the selected artist’s expense, the artwork may require certification by an electrical, civil and/or structural engineer licensed to practice in the state of New Mexico and reviewed by a professional fine art conservator (if applicable).
