OVERVIEW
York County Community College, in partnership with the Maine Arts Commission, seeks qualifications from artists or artist teams for a public art commission for the newly expanded Center of Excellence in Manufacturing and Trades (CEMT) in Sanford, Maine. The selected artist will create a site-specific work that welcomes students, visitors, and industry partners while reflecting the mission of one of Maine's newest workforce training facilities.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1994, York County Community College has become an important educational and workforce partner for southern Maine. Through close collaboration with regional employers, the college provides accessible pathways to careers in manufacturing, engineering technologies, construction trades, and other high-demand industries.
The new Center of Excellence in Manufacturing and Trades represents a significant investment in Maine's workforce and economic future. Located in Sanford, the facility serves students entering careers in advanced manufacturing while supporting incumbent worker training and partnerships with employers throughout York County and the surrounding region, including industries connected to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Pratt & Whitney, General Dynamics, and Maine's growing network of manufacturers.
The building reflects the college's commitment to innovation, hands-on learning, and preparing graduates with the practical skills needed to strengthen Maine's economy.
SITE + ARTWORK OVERVIEW
The selection committee seeks a permanent work of public art that reinforces the identity of the Center of Excellence while creating a strong sense of arrival for students and visitors.
The committee is interested in artwork that reflects the spirit of making, not simply manufacturing itself, but the creativity, ingenuity, precision, and collaboration necessary for excellence in manufacturing and the skilled trades.
The committee encourages artists to consider opportunities for collaboration with the CEMT community. Where feasible, the selected artist may work alongside faculty and students, such as those in the welding program, to fabricate or enhance elements of the artwork. These collaborations have the potential to enrich both the artwork and the educational experience by connecting professional artistic practice with hands-on technical training. Participation and access to college facilities will be coordinated with CEMT faculty and are subject to program schedules, safety requirements, and facility availability.
