The Hanna Nagel Prize was founded in 1998 by the five presidents of Karlsruhe at the time to promote female visual artists aged 40 and over in the Karlsruhe administrative district and to recognize their qualified artistic work. The prize also honors the artistic work of Hanna Nagel (1907–1975), an important representative of the “New Objectivity” movement, who studied at the Baden State Art School in Karlsruhe from 1925 to 1929.
As a renowned award aimed exclusively at women in art over the age of 40 from the Karlsruhe administrative district, the prize underlines the increasing recognition and appreciation for the work of experienced female artists. This year, the prize is undergoing an exciting innovation: in addition to the established art genres of painting, graphics, photography and sculpture, the field of media art is being introduced.
The winner of the 17th Hanna Nagel Prize will also be selected by a jury of experts. The artist's solo exhibition will take place in autumn 2025 at the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe.
