The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Art Commission is seeking an artist or artist team to design and install a large-scale mural on the exterior of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in the Boston-Thurmond neighborhood.
Boston-Thurmond is a historically Black residential neighborhood north of downtown Winston-Salem and the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center acts as a hub for neighborhood activity, attracting residents of all ages. The community center hosts line dancing classes, cyber clubs, summer camps, and so on. Teens and kids come to play volleyball and basketball indoors or cross the street to play at the neighborhood pool during the summer. People can also enjoy the walking trails and exercise equipment outside.
The Community Center mural will become a focal point for the area. Committee members want to ensure there is a great amount of community participation in the creation of the mural to ensure long-term buy-in.
