Nestled on Governors Island, the Forest for Trees Artist Residency offers a unique sanctuary within beautifully restored historic houses. Artists enjoy inspiring shared studio spaces located above a vibrant gallery open to the public, fostering dialogue between creators and community. This residency invites ecofeminist artists working across mediums who are passionate about exploring the intersections of ecology, gender, and social justice. Residents connect deeply with a supportive network of like-minded ecofeminist artists and organizers, cultivating collaboration and activism. Amidst the island’s natural beauty and rich history, this program nurtures creative practice rooted in sustainability, resilience, and collective care—inviting artists to grow, engage, and amplify ecofeminist voices in a dynamic cultural setting.
Residency Dates for 2026
The FFT Residency Program on Governors Island will be held during the following periods in 2026:
May 10th – July 12th
July 13th – September 13th
Applicants are strongly encouraged to select one or both sessions according to their availability and flexibility.
This will help the Artist Steering Committee (our jury) build a balanced and inclusive residency schedule.
Please note that selecting only one date may reduce your chances of being placed, as one session receive significantly more applications than others.
Forest For Trees Collective (FFT) Artist Residency Program is process-based, without expectations that residencies produce a final product. The program provides artists across environmental justice praxes time, space and a supportive community in which to develop ideas and focus on their artistic direction.
