The Montevideo Creatives, a non-profit and non-government, artist-led organization in southwestern Minnesota, is seeking proposals for a signature mural to be completed at the south end of our historic downtown on the upper half of the large north wall of the Chamber of Commerce building. This select public art opportunity will support the community of Montevideo through creative placemaking, wayfinding and belonging, aesthetic uplift and visual joy. We are 128 miles west of Minneapolis, at the confluence of the Chippewa and Minnesota Rivers, surrounded by prairielands, farmlands, and stars.
We have envisioned visuals symbolic of Montevideo’s character. We are a diverse community, framed by the Upper Minnesota River Valley, a rich history, and a contemporary sensibility. We aim to educate, engage, and communicate through this public art opportunity. A consideration of our landscape, riverways, geologic and human history will make the work more powerful and relevant.
As part of Montevideo’s emerging arts scene, this mural project is intended to strengthen and enliven the downtown business district. Proposals are due July 15, 2026. From these submissions, three semi-finalists will be selected to present their concept, design approach and proposed budget, ideally in person in Montevideo, between August 15 and September 15. Each semi-finalist selected to present will receive a $600 honorarium. The final selected muralist will be enlisted to work with the input of a diverse committee of community members and complete the work in summer of 2027.
