One for Sorrow

The Whole Trinity explores the connection between mind, body, and soul as analogous to the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Each primary subsection is representative of one of the three aspects of the Trinity: mind, the Father, is blue; body, the Son, is red; and soul, the Holy Ghost, is yellow. Each dyad forms something new. When mind and body meet (purple), we concern ourselves with legacy: the continuation of our lineage and our ideals. Mind and soul converge in green nature, as nature and its preservation is pivotal to expanding both. Something as simple as sitting under a tree has given rise to foundational theories and beliefs the world over. As body and soul collide we find the need for ingenuity. Though some might argue that feats of engineering better lie at the intersection of body and mind, as engineering is applying critical thought for the easement of the body, I prefer to think of engineering a different way. While the body and mind are individualistic in nature, the soul is collective. The power of the soul is its ability to connect us. Therefore, when the soul interacts with matters of the body we see communities form cities and infrastructure; they create not for themselves, but for those around them. When mind, body, and soul meet in the center, we form a full individual. The center frame is replaced with a mirror so that the viewer can literally see themselves in the piece. This ties in with my belief that we can find ourselves in the whole trinity, and the Holy Trinity, and that we are divine beings unto ourselves. 

The Whole Trinity

“Cycles of Growth” is meant to represent a growth path and the feeling we all get of returning to the same situation in life over and over again. Each corner of the triangular piece means its own thing: Right Actions, Right Thoughts, Right Beliefs. As you follow the path from the center (the ‘egg’, ‘ego’, or ‘seed’) you will be taken in circles around your center of origin. The idea is that Right Thoughts lead to Right Beliefs lead to Right Actions lead to Right Thoughts, and so on. As we continue the journey that is life, we grow and expand outward away from our origin. We go through things that force us to grow, whether we want to or not. Though it may seem like we are returning to the same position relative to our beginning, we are actually growing and creating distance from our past self every moment. It is very important that the spiral is not uniform; there are deviations in the line as there are in life. We will not always grow with every action, and it is possible to ‘regress’ a bit, though it is not possible to remove the path that you have already taken as it is in the past. It is also important that the spiral continues even when we cannot perceive it (when the line flows off of the canvas). After we have been through enough and learned enough things, it becomes easier for us to grow and we begin doing invisible work within ourselves that even we are not aware of.
