About

Lale Duruiz, based in İstanbul, is an industrial engineer and a lecturer in İstanbul Bilgi University, with a PhD in Production Management. She has been a lead researcher in many international projects. This career has led her to use digital technology with an analytical approach during her art journey. On the other hand, the art world gave her opportunities to work intuitively freeing her from academic boundaries. Art and science integrate while expressing beauty of nature in her work.

Her experimenting started in the 90’s with modifying Polaroid films during development, using pressure on the emulsion and then adding colors and figures. She has been using the opposite approach for the last 10 years, after taking photographs; she transforms and works with them on an iPad screen.

After years of sharing them solely with friends, lately many of her work have been used in book covers, chapter headings, posters and cards, which can be seen in her Instagram account. She also have another account where she shares more; https://www.instagram.com/lale_limon/ This year, for the first time, she joined an international exhibition, entitled ‘Other Stories’ with four of her pieces.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For the last ten years, I have been teaching Biomimicry, a science of valuing nature for what we can learn from. Reconnecting with nature, I have gained deep appreciation of the natural world. This journey has led me to experimenting art in relation to nature.

When I am fascinated by a scene in nature or by a beehive box, I start imagining how I might transform it to another esthetic visual piece, many times to raise awareness of a social or an environmental issue. With the utilisation of digital technologies my aspiration became possible.

My experiment starts with an original photographic image, continues with my fingers working intuitively on the screen by manipulating, morphing, coloring and painting. During this process, the original image departs from the memory and the screen; a totally different one is created.

For me, this approach has opened up a new perspective of reproduction, since my images and patterns enable me to originate a range of new artwork, sometimes around one story. A shadow on a window screen becomes a flying bird, the bird nests on a tree, the tree trunk becomes my shadow. The art cycle continues.
