Based on a Historical Folklore from Russia, Alexander Pushkin’s “The Fisherman & The Fish,” written beautifully in 1833. The mural is a symbol of the responsibility we all share to be environmentally sound in our decisions to not take from nature to the point of turmoil and nothingness. The Fisherman’s Wife is painted into the sea with five shades of blue getting darker and darker based on her demands of Greed.

Historically, very little actions were taking to oversee the Environment during the 1800s. It was a concept relatively unknown – but the fore-shadowing of it was written clearly in this Folklore. Relevant to our current time and conditions of our Oceans, Forrest and Planet.

This compiled with our natural tendency towards being greedy and asking for more and more. Current issues with the Advances and Aggression Russia is currently undertaking in Ukraine and Crimea combined with Neo-Fascists creating a dark-undertone for the Sovereignty of Ukraine – nearly a 100 year cycle from events in the past. Within this greed for power and consumption it directly affects the people in senseless killing, murder and human suffering.

I hope this mural will give people the chance to step back and create intelligent dialogue to discuss these things with proper action that will give us all peace of mind and our independence.

Giant Jerboas are the distant cousin of the common place Jerboa. Due to their hind-legs they are commonly thought to be a variety of Kangaroo – however this is in fact not true. They are bipedal and have been clocked up to speeds of 20 kilometres per hour.

The Giant Jerboa is very similar to it’s small cousin in a lot of regards – it has been a mystery to modern day scientist why this variety were able to grow so large in the same region of Manchuria, China. They live in rock formations and small caves – some dens are set for life – and often times they have been known to drive out predators from these locations. Unlike their smaller cousin the Giant Jerboa are known to live and hunt in packs – working together to find and secure food.

Within their colony – they are known to be polygynous with their breeding habits. The time period starting in the beginning of Spring and can happen several times a year for the female to produce a new litter. The litter is between 1-3 young.

Sadly the Giant Jerboa is an Endangered Species – these two here are the last two known to the planet, named “Betta” & “Alex.” Both are females – there is no hope at reproducing or having this species live past these two. In an effort for their conservation they have been removed from their natural lands and environment. The majority of their natural home has been altered and or destroyed by human intervention – with no efforts of a natural conservation.

Raising the question as to the ethics of how as Humans we co-live with other species and fellow animals. Which is the worst crime; the destruction of natural environments or the removal of animals to a foreign environment. How can we prevent this from happening to other species of animals?

In April, 2013 JBAK were invited to Phoenix, Arizona as their debut return to the US and for JBAK’s largest mural to date.

The two people depicted in the mural are Chris Neito, a 5th generation Phoenix native and a huge supporter of the arts and the city of Phoenix itself, and Addison’s grandmother Maxine, who herself has lived nearly her entire life in Phoenix and is now the matriarch of 4 generations of Phoenix natives.

Addison viewed the opportunity to paint his grandmother as a “chance to give something back to a woman who has been in my entire life with nothing but support and love for every decision I have made. The chance to show her in person what she has meant to me is one of the rarest chances we get in life.”

For this piece JBAK attempted a new technique of working together deciding to work over top of one another rather than dividing the sections of the portrait as they have done in the past. The linear hatch lines of Addison would create the shape of the two figures and fill their silhouette with color and texture.  James would then paint the photorealistic elements on top creating another layer to give the actual definition and details of both Chris and Grandma Maxine.

Phoenix is well known for it’s intensely vibrant and colorful sunsets which create hues that run the spectrum from yellows, oranges, magentas, blues and purples. This was the basis for the color theory of the mural. It was the largest color range JBAK have worked with on one project at around 23 colors.

The CAVE is a secret space in Berlin where a group of street artist meet once a week to work and collaborate in a safe and encouraging environment without worry of police or interference. The main goal of the CAVE is to promote creativity and experimentation while giving the artists involved a chance to share ideas and contacts.

As Karl Addison’s art and vision evolves—from blank slate, to paper, to mural, to installation, to unoccupied public space—our understanding and comprehension of the world around us begins to unfold as well.  We may not notice his input, infiltrating our subconscious—our everyday—but it’s there. A beautiful woman’s face composed of negative space watching peacefully over a cemetery in Wedding, a fragile old Jewish woman towering over a decommissioned factory in Berlin, an urban zoo of imagined creatures deposited all over the globe, an abandoned room filled with 4,500 fat babies…Addison’s art and commentary on history and culture are everywhere, becoming part of the collective unconscious. 

Through his travels to Italy, Israel, Japan, throughout the US, and his current residence in Berlin, Addison’s overarching theme of people and the spaces they occupy and interact with has taken shape.  By focusing on pieces, which work to become part of public space rather than interrupt it, his intent to create regenerative art through murals and other mediums is being actualized.  He has achieved this both independently and collaboratively with other contemporary artists and painters, most notably James Boullough.  Addison’s recent and current collaborative projects also highlight his more narrowed focus of interconnectedness, “connecting humanity around the world with different cultures from different places,” he wants us to value tiny lines, details, to appreciate a world view and hopefully, start extolling minute details of our own.

It takes an extraordinary person, one with talent, courage, and patience, to express himself the way Addison does.  To project his voice and vision for the world to see—to rip it out of a sketch book or a blank page in his mind—and produce it.  To take it beyond the two-dimensional and spray paint, wheat paste, bomb, the side of a building with an illimitable piece of art.  To exhibit in public space—on walls, on clothing, in art galleries—what a beautiful fucking thing.  Art—“a new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind” leaving the watching to the watched.

Pótoprens, Haiti.
Flows of people, pigs, goats, like an exodus of unorganized ants of different colonies who have all lost their queen.  Everyone here is a juggler. Juggling with all that is left.  Balancing enormous heavy burdens on the heads, screaming "dlo, dlo, dlo!!" "Water, water, water!" Barking, singing in Kreole & cacophonic un-understandable sounds at first.  Sweat, dust, lots of dust, heat, smells of damped trash, cleaned clothes hanging on barbwire, on trees or roofs to dry. 
 
Cité Soleil. 
Chaos into chaos.  Naked children running, beautiful, smiling, suspicious & clever. "Blanc! Hey you! Chocolate?" The first words they address you if you're white. Being white here means not being Haitian.  You can be Mauritanian - you will still be white.  UN soldiers.  Minustah. Logbase. Armed Militaries, armed gangs. The armed gangs enhance their "activity" of extortion especially in September  - October. They have to find money to send their kids to school. Most of them with wearing their blue "Unicef" bag -part of the "Go-to-school" kit. But they still need the money for shoes and uniforms.  Jealousy. Treachery. Haiti, Republic ONG - the NGO Republic.  It's hard being thrown a tiny piece of bread and having to share it among so many people. It drives humanity crazy.  

The effort of building some artisan labs in such a place.  Project started, project financed, funds now finished. Structure, built. Machines, given. Training, given.  Structures, robbed, often. Machines, half are already broken. Artists: amazing. Creative, brave. All they want is to earn their living by working, not being part of the gangs. But living and working in a place ruled by them, you can't pretend they're not there. They'll never let you forget they are. Not easy, not at all. Materials, often unavailable, or very expensive. Everything is imported. The challenge: for these labs to produce enough to sustain themselves. Producing, selling, to the rich “Blancs” who can afford it. We're doing it, every day, with a bit of luck, a lot of effort.

But working here, going every day down from Petionville, the "wealthy" neighborhood, to Cité Soleil, one of the poorest slums of the continent, and dealing with all this... It's sometimes just too much. You can't process everything in one Blanc's heart; sometimes it seems too spongy not to drown. It makes you scream from the inside, a long silent scream, before you can breathe in again and start putting the pieces of this scattered puzzle back together.

Francesca D. Mural - Found In Phoenix, Az

Artist Karl Addison & James Bullough will be working on their next and largest to date mural in Berlin. The mural is curated by Etsy and will be near the heart of Kreuzberg. Addison's work will entail an elderly women from one of his adventures to Tel Aviv. Her gaze will be towards Ritterstr - she is the idea of life, inspiration & history. Bullough's contribution to the mural will be creating movement and energy both in the background and wrapping it in to the foreground with the elderly lady. Bullough will accomplish this with his trademark arrows and repetition of elements throughout the composition. Their combined work will be tied together with a cool color palette of monochromatic purples with some highlighted pinks.

iNVASiON - Art Installation

These ghosts are a concepts I have been working with for several months now. I started drawing them as a way to relax myself with the concept of "giving up." Not in an negative fashion - giving up on all the things that bother me and stress me out.

Give Up - Art Show

A concept for over a year - to cover an entire room with posters of Baby Fatso. Originally 2,500 babies were printed, cut out and ready to be pasted. During installing - the calculations were a tiny bit off. Will need another 2,000 to finish the room. Making the total number of posters around 4,500.

A Treasure Map will be made to see the final installation. Contact me with interest. Projected completion end of June 2011.
