Why are so many women afraid of the word "Feminist"?

"I'm not a Feminist"  

Alutiiq in Berlin are a series of masks that are influenced by the ceremonial masks from the Alutiiq native tribes from Kodiak, Alaska. Growing up in Kodiak, the Alutiiq culture played a large part in my upbringing. I am, however, not Alutiiq and not native to Alaska - my mother is from Germany and my father is a Jersey Boy. Alutiiq art and masks had always interested me in that they are able to express such delicate emotions in such a simplistic way. I started to learn how to carve the masks as a teenager and learn more about their meanings. As a non Alutiiq I felt that this was such a sacred tradition and something that I maybe didn't have the right to reproduce. My objective is to explore that uncomfortable feeling  I have towards the Alutiiq culture and my own identity, and hopefully down the line I will be able to find myself in the masks that I create.
