The Character Walk of Pictoplasma Festival 2019 leads through seven project spaces in Berlin’s Mitte district, showing the work of ten artists in the fields of illustration, animation, digital design, and comics to a Berlin audience for the first time.
The walk starts at St.-Marien- und St.-Nikolai-Friedhof, a graveyard on Prenzlauer Allee where a plan for the Character Walk is handed out. In the former custodian’s house four exhibitions are on display. One of them is from Luke Pearson, celebrated author and artist of the graphic novel Hilda and Netflix series of the same name. He shows original drawings from the comic as well as sketches and objects that inspired his creative process.
In Volume, a project space in Brunnenstraße, New Zealand illustrator and animation filmmaker Rob Wallace aka Parallel Teeth shows his installation Relax, an invitation to try to do exactly that––to booming drone music.
At WHITECONCEPTS in Auguststraße, Félicie Haymoz shows original drawings, sketches, and references from the creative process for Wes Anderson’s film Isle of Dogs for which she was single-handedly responsible for all character design. The highlight of this show are the two original stop-motion puppets from the film.
At the Cervantes Cultural Institute, creative duos Cabeza Patata and Twee Muizen use the entire media spectrum to represent their universes: masks, figurines, drawings, painting, 3D models, and digital prints.
The neurotitan gallery at Haus Schwarzenberg at Hackesche Höfe hosts a selection of work by the 35 alumni from 18 countries who took part in the 7th Pictoplasma Academy in fall 2018.
Featuring work by the following artists: John Bond (UK), Cabeza Patata (ES/UK) , Laura Callaghan (IRE), Yukai Du (CN), Félicie Haymoz (CH), Luke Pearson (UK), Philippa Rice (UK), Laurie Rowan (UK), Parallel Teeth (NZ), Twee Muizen (ES) and Pictoplasma Academy 2018 alumni.
