Air, liquids and energy flow - both outside our selves, and in systems of our own
and of our own making. In In to through out, eight artists investigate flow, pressure,
fluctuation and what happens when there are gaps in a system.
Hidden tubes supply oxygenated blood; water; internet. Flows are directed and
leaks are fixed. We are surrounded by holes and porous surfaces, we are made of
them. For a hole to exist there must be a surface, a body, an outside and an inside.
The hole is where there is a lack of surface; a lack of matter. Holes are everything
from the bodily to the astronomical.
Some holes are portals, necessary points of exchange, by evolution or by design.
Where there is no containment there is diffusion. Things come and go, until an
equilibrium is reached. Other holes are defects, disruptive, dangerous. Still, we
gravitate towards them, confounded by the presence in their absence; trying to
find what lies within or beyond. The antithesis of squinting at the sun.
Now the durchgehend geöffnet has been interrupted, and the innocent ‘Let’s go outside’
is suffused with new complications. We are confronted with our porous biological
reality, and with questions of who is policing our desire
