Concept & Story
In June 1972 Erich Honecker and Fidel Castro met in East Berlin. As a symbol for their strong connection, Honecker handed over a gift to Castro – a ‘Berlin bear’ made of plush. Thereupon Castro pulled out a map of Cuba and pointed on an island in the middle of the Bay of Pigs. The island was named Cayo Ernesto Thaelmann: ‘Ernst-Thälmann-Insel’ – including a monument on the beach. Due to today’s role as a military area it is officially forbidden to enter the island.

Military area? Access forbidden!? We thought, Great! Sounds clearly like an invitation for crossing boarders.
We created a workshop-week-rocket that KATAPULTs you directly into the Caribbean’s! Well, directly into Berlin-based Mellowpark where you’ll find the river Spree and a ruin from the GDR, where we together with your help create many performative islands!

To ensure that you feel completely comfortable and you can concentrate on the workshops throughout the week, we will camp on-site. We will take care of any of your needs during the week with 3 delicious meals each day. This care-free package costs 75,- € and secures your place on the KATAPULT islands!
