Daffodil series 

A model daffodil made from yellow paper and bamboo was installed in a local woods in spring.

Daffodils are one of the most worked on and cultivated flowers in history.  During spring swathes and clusters of Daffodils appear to us in the city.  Planted, managed with artful placement in the cities and towns they make up part of then natural structures of our public spaces. Popping up in the managed and municipal green spaces of the city they present a hyperreality of nature and its symbol of spring. 

Yellow Paper Daffodil 

Based on the urban herring gulls which i encountered living in Exeter. These birds frequently tore open bin bags on collection day, nested on the rooftop of my house. Seeing them close up for many years i was always impressed by their size and craftiness. It became an obvious and always present layer of experience looking at nature in the everyday. The model adds another half a foot to life size herring Gull to create an uncanny perception. 

The model gull was bright back to the sea at Exmouth.

Looking out of the city through the gaps made by the streets, up in the sky appear small planes. Shiny metal planes hover over our heads. The rumble is heard often without seeing and mostly blends in with the traffic and hum of the city. The wind distorts the sound and this adds to the strange uncanny sight and experience seeing the plane gently hover and float. At some angles it’s hard to tell if it’s moving. These interactions prod the everyday but never break it.  
The models made or arranged in my house also represent the escapism found through television, books and screens as we day dream. Getting on a plane and flying to another place offers us freedom and a search for a better existence.
