Loom is an architectural response to the limbo of feeling threatened within your home(land). A Persian rug from my childhood home lies on the floor and a red neon rectangle of the same dimensions floats overhead. I am Iranian-American, even if I feel as though this part of myself is still developing, and the piece is meant to encourage people who may not experience this existential threat to stand under the red aura.

Produced in collaboration with environmental art advocacy group Nocturnal Medicine and Brooklyn-based cultural programming platform Talk | Show, Elegy for Insects was a party centered on mass insect population decline. In our era of ecological grief, we are encountering losses of a kind and scale not before experienced. In places that are dominated by settler colonialist white supremacist capitalist power structures, we find ourselves with a lack of spaces and social practices dedicated to facing and understanding these losses as a community.

In response, Elegy for Insects was a space and experience that brought people together to collectively acknowledge, move and feel through the fact of the decline and extinction of many of the world’s insects. Talk | Show’s loft space was transformed into an immersive insectine paradise with a dance floor guided by The Large and illuminated by projections produced for the night and a custom neon sculprues and chrysalis installation by Anahita Bradberry. 

A massive altar to our insect friends bookended the dance floor. A reading room provided a quieter space for conversation and learning, as informed by the party’s bibliography. Midway through the night, we led guests through a multi-sensory sound bath and tactile experience. The sound bath married sonic textures of insect sounds with the drone of a singing bowl, crescendoed with the rustle of prairie grasses and rain. Together, the composition created an auditory meditation that brought the party’s focus to the fore for a moment of collective reflection.

Elegy For Insects (collaboration with Nocturnal Medicine)

“Topology Study” was created with Nobuo Sekine’s “Phase-Drawing (Topology 16)” (1968) in mind. As organic bodies and minimal geometries, plasma sculptures are exercises in life-forming: filling fragile tubular vessels with pulsing plasma. Each object is simultaneously a multidimensional line and a borderless field of light.

The forms took shape through improvisation over the flames, twisting the 11mm glass into soft loops. The two ruby red tubes are filled with argon gas, creating a luminous hue of red with a jewel-like glow. Once illuminated, the pieces were arranged together to emphasize the calligraphic nature of the medium.
