Complete Infiltration

This piece was initially inspired from a gold metallic mesh that came from a champagne bottle. Let’s face it, art is not a very eco-friendly activity. 

With Complete Infiltration, I wanted to convey our ever-growing challenge of the trash that chokes our planet. The materials used are mostly found or thrifted. The frilly circular white sections are leftover canvas material that I saved from another piece. The small beads come from broken necklaces and bracelets. Even some of the threads are more than 30 years old, a collection of yarns I was given by my nan. The colourful beads and embroidery represent coral reefs and the golden mesh and thread is the plastic that surrounds our everyday life. It infiltrates every part of our lives and our reliance on it is insatiable. From our kitchens and homes, our mineral water, in the food that we eat, in the food that the animals eat, in the minuscule microbes and tiniest of plankton and in the air that we breathe, it, like the gold thread; everywhere.
