The School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO) invites applications for the Artist Residency for Photographers and Photo-Based Artists. The 6-month international residency and extended photographic mentorship is one of the most unique residencies of its kind, and includes 20 weeks of supervised technical assistance and career development consultation meetings.

  
This residency is designed for visual artists who have previously completed formal training in visual arts and/or lens-based media and are ready to intensely focus on an aspect of their existing career or on a specific upcoming project. As a self-directed residency, artists are afforded the time and environment needed to research, experiment, and produce an on-going body of work as a professional working artist. Through an extensive residency, we provide the physical space and regular mentorship consultation designed to meet the individual needs of our participants. Artists who complete the residency are offered the opportunity to exhibit their work in a yearly group exhibition at The SPAO Centre Gallery.

  
**SPAO can accept new residents two times per year, and we are now taking applications for 2024 and 2025:**

Artists are responsible for living expenses, materials and accommodation.

All applicants are eligible for **the Jason Michaels Memorial Bursary**. This bursary is given once a year, **supports an artist through the full duration of the SPAO Artist Residency**, and will provide artists with the ability to participate in the SPAO community and develop their artistic careers.

  
Applicants who identify as Black and/or Indigenous and/or a member of another racialized community are eligible to apply for the $3000 CAD Spectrum Bursary.

  
The SPHINX bursary ($1500 CAD) is given out annually to a student graduating from the SPAO Diploma Program and has committed to entering the Artist Residency in the fall, winter, or summer term, immediately following their graduation.

  
Past participants in the residency have successfully received funding from granting bodies to help facilitate their residency.
